Obverse description Central field features an elaborate interlaced cypher of the letters M and L enclosed within a laurel wreath tied at the base with a decorative bow. The monogram refers to Maria, Landgravine of Hesse, the issuing authority. A circular Latin legend surrounds the wreath, reading MARIA D G LANDG HASSN P M B C O HAN AD M, separated by star stops. The overall design is executed in a refined baroque style typical of mid-eighteenth-century German coinage.
