Additional information

Leopold I faced relentless Ottoman pressure throughout the 1680s — the siege of Vienna itself came in 1683, just one year after this piece was struck at the Graz mint. Provincial Austrian mints like Graz operated with considerable autonomy during this period, and the Styrian facility ran parallel to Vienna producing subsidiary silver specifically for regional circulation in the southeastern Habsburg lands, precisely the territories most exposed to the Ottoman frontier.

The Graz mint closed permanently in 1691, making its output from the 1680s the final decade of a centuries-old operation.
