The 1954 date places this issue at the tenth anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising of August 1944, the armed resistance against the Nazi-aligned Tiso government and occupying German forces. The uprising was militarily suppressed within two months, but the communist postwar government elevated it as a founding myth of Czechoslovak antifascist identity — and minted accordingly.
