The Kronstadt Republic was the short-lived autonomous commune declared by sailors and workers at the Kronstadt naval base in the Gulf of Finland during the revolutionary upheaval of 1917. The base had a long tradition of radical politics, and its de facto independence from both the Provisional Government and the Bolsheviks — at least in its own estimation — made local scrip a practical necessity when central currency supplies became unreliable.

Pick S235 falls within the "S" series prefix, catalogued as a local or provisional issue, which already tells a specialist something about its standing: not recognized state currency, but not pure emergency scrip either. Kronstadt issued again, more famously, during the 1921 uprising — that episode ended in Bolshevik suppression. These 1917 pieces predate that reckoning by four years.
