Additional information

Papua New Guinea had been independent for less than two years when this piece was struck — the nation declared sovereignty in September 1975, making the 1977 Silver Jubilee an early test of the young central bank's capacity to produce commemorative coinage. The Bank of Papua New Guinea contracted the issue to an external mint, as domestic striking infrastructure was not yet established.

The .925 fineness places it among the heavier silver commemoratives of that jubilee cycle, which saw dozens of Commonwealth nations issue similar pieces under broadly coordinated programs.
