John Paul II visited Papua New Guinea in May 1984 as part of a sweeping nine-country Pacific and Asian tour — one of the longest single papal journeys on record. PNG was among the few stops where a commemorative coin issue was specifically authorized by the central bank rather than a private mint operator, which accounts for the relatively controlled mintage and consistent strike quality seen across surviving examples.
