This commemorative issue marks the 25th anniversary of the Bank of Papua New Guinea, which was established in 1973 following independence preparations and formally took over central banking functions from the Reserve Bank of Australia. Note Printing Australia in Melbourne — the same facility that has handled much of the Pacific region's currency production — handled the printing, a relationship that reflects how thoroughly Australian institutions remained embedded in PNG's monetary infrastructure long after formal independence.
Pick 17 is a relatively short-lived commemorative type; most examples encountered have seen little to no circulation.
