Torrebesses is a small municipality in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida, and like dozens of Catalan villages during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency scrip when coins vanished from circulation almost overnight after July 1936. This note — redeemable not in pesetas but in ten kilos of bread — was issued directly by the local bakery, José Torrebadella's panaderia. Commodity-backed scrip of this kind was a practical response to hoarding and supply uncertainty; bread was more dependable than currency.
It is catalogued in the Albertí reference for Catalan Civil War local issues.
