Ukraine's 10 karbovantsiv coinage revives a denomination last used during the brief Ukrainian People's Republic of 1917–1920, a deliberate act of numismatic memory during an ongoing war. The karbovanets was suppressed under Soviet rule and the name itself became historically charged — its reappearance in 2025 is a direct political statement about continuity of statehood.
The colorized brass format places this firmly in the commemorative rather than circulation category, produced by the National Bank of Ukraine under conditions complicated by the ongoing Russian invasion, with some mint operations relocated or disrupted since 2022.
