Issued in 2022 during active hostilities following Russia's full-scale invasion, this coin commemorates the naval branch that gained international attention after the cruiser Moskva — flagship of Russia's Black Sea Fleet — was struck by Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles and sank on April 14, 2022. The sinking marked the largest loss of a naval vessel in combat since the Falklands War.
Struck in zinc alloy rather than the cupronickel used for earlier commemoratives in this series, a material choice almost certainly driven by wartime supply constraints and the need to redirect strategic metals.
