The Saviour-Transfiguration Monastery on Mhar, founded in 1619 near Lubny in the Poltava region, was suppressed twice — once under Russian imperial pressure in the late eighteenth century and again during Soviet anti-religious campaigns, when it was converted to other uses for decades. It was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church only after independence. This coin is part of Ukraine's long-running "Monasteries of Ukraine" series, which began in the early 2000s as the National Bank systematically documented ecclesiastical sites reclaimed from Soviet-era closure.
