Issued to commemorate the Feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos — Pokrova — a holiday with particular resonance in Ukrainian national identity, having been adopted as the patron feast of the Zaporozhian Cossacks. The Sich's military brotherhood placed itself under the Intercession's protection, and the holiday remained politically charged through the Soviet period, when its observance was suppressed.
The National Bank of Ukraine launched its religious and architectural commemorative series in the mid-1990s as part of a broader cultural reclamation project following independence. This 2005 issue falls within that program's mature phase, when mintages had stabilized and distribution through licensed dealers was well-established.
