| Obverse description | At the center of the highly polished proof field, a large eight-pointed star — evoking the Star of Bethlehem — radiates outward, with its central roundel bearing the Ukrainian state trident (tризуб) on a shield. The date 2002 is subtly incorporated into the upper rays of the star. Surrounding the star, stylized snowflake ornaments are scattered across the field, while elaborate baroque acanthus-scroll motifs flank the lower half of the design on both sides. The denomination numeral '10' and the Cyrillic legends 'УКРАЇНА' above and 'ГРИВЕНЬ' below are inscribed in the lower portion of the field, with the fineness marks 'Ag 925' at lower left and the weight indicator '31.1' at lower right. |

Ukraine's early commemorative silver program in the years immediately following independence leaned heavily on Orthodox Christian themes as a deliberate cultural reclamation — Soviet iconography had suppressed public religious expression for decades, and the National Bank's coin series of the late 1990s and early 2000s served in part as an institutional acknowledgment of that suppression's end. The 2002 Christmas issue falls squarely within that project.
Zahreba cataloguing of Ukrainian commemoratives from this period remains the authoritative reference precisely because NBU documentation of its own early issues was inconsistent.
