| Additional information |
Issued to mark the millennial anniversary of the Christianization of Kievan Rus under Prince Volodymyr the Great in 988 AD, this coin appeared at a moment when newly independent Ukraine was actively constructing a national historical narrative rooted in medieval Rus identity — a direct counter to Moscow's parallel claim to that same inheritance. The Orthodox baptism of the Rus remains one of the most contested origin stories in Eastern European historiography.
