Comments

One of the more unusual surviving examples of Austrian notgeld, this piece was issued by a timber merchant — Ludwig Altzinger, a wood industrialist — and produced from the very material his business traded in. Thin wood veneer as a payment medium is rare even within the already eccentric notgeld canon of 1920–1921, when Austrian municipalities and private firms issued emergency scrip in almost every conceivable substrate: silk, leather, aluminium foil, linen.

The choice of material here was almost certainly a practical advertisement as much as a monetary necessity. Altzinger had the wood.
