Comments

Austrian Notgeld of this type was produced in vast quantities between 1920 and 1922, when chronic small-coin shortages forced municipalities across the former empire to issue their own emergency fractional currency. Spitz an der Donau, a small wine-producing market town in the Wachau valley, was one of hundreds of Lower Austrian communities that contracted local or regional printers to produce these notes — collectibility was understood from the start, and many Notgeld series were frankly designed as much for the philatelic trade as for actual commerce.

The Jaksc/Pick 1122 reference places this firmly within the documented Lower Austrian municipal series. Whether it saw meaningful circulation or went straight into collector packets is, as with most Wachau Notgeld, difficult to establish.
