Spitz an der Donau sits at the heart of the Wachau valley, and this 10 Heller note is one of the thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues that flooded small municipalities between 1919 and 1921 — a direct consequence of wartime coin hoarding that left everyday commerce paralyzed. The Marktgemeinde turned to Eduard Sieger in Vienna, a printer closely associated with the Wachau Notgeld series, while the design itself came from a local hand: Maler Gransgruber of Stein an der Donau, a town barely five kilometers downstream.
The Jaksch/Pick reference JPR1122.10IIa designates this as one of multiple Spitz issues, distinguished by signature or serial variants.
