Sankt Valentin is a small industrial town in Lower Austria, best known as a railway junction on the main Vienna–Linz line. This 10 Heller piece is a Notgeld issue — emergency small-change scrip printed by the municipality itself to address the catastrophic coin shortage that persisted across Austria well into the early 1920s, long after the armistice. The central government was in no position to mint adequate fractional currency, so hundreds of towns filled the gap with their own paper.

The Jaksc catalogue reference places this within the vast corpus of Austrian local Notgeld, most of which was printed in runs too small to survive in quantity. St. Valentin issues are not among the better-documented series.
