Piberbach is a small municipality in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the notgeld wave that swept Austrian towns and villages between 1919 and 1921. With the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system and chronic small-change shortages, hundreds of municipalities printed their own emergency pfennig-denomination scrip — some crudely, some with surprising ambition. Piberbach kept it simple.
The JPR reference places this within the Jaksch catalog of Austrian local issues, the standard authority for this material. Survivorship is high for notgeld of this type; they were widely saved as novelties even at the time of issue.
