Mariazell notgeld of this type was issued by private traders and local businesses during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria from 1914 onward. Josef Rohrbacher — almost certainly a local merchant or innkeeper — printed these 10 Heller notes through Radinger, a printer operating in the same small Styrian pilgrimage town. The issuer and printer being in the same community is characteristic of the earliest wave of Austrian notgeld, before municipalities took over the practice.
Mariazell's status as a major Catholic pilgrimage destination meant seasonal cash demand spiked sharply, making small-denomination liquidity genuinely critical for local commerce.
