Maissau is a small market town in the Weinviertel, and this 10 Heller Notgeld dates from the final phase of Austrian municipal emergency currency — the postwar inflation period when the central government's paper was distrusted and local administrations filled the gap themselves. Three signatures were required for validity: the Bürgermeister, Vizebürgermeister, and a Gemeinderat, an unusually formal authentication structure for a denomination worth almost nothing even at issue.
The 1920 Maissau series is scarce simply because small runs were printed for genuinely local use, not for the collector trade that was already packaging Notgeld elsewhere in Austria and Germany by that point.
