Lohnsburg is a small rural municipality in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a piece of Austrian Kleingeldersatzscheine — the emergency small-change scrip that flooded the country from roughly 1919 onward as coins vanished from circulation following the collapse of the Habsburg economy. Hundreds of municipalities issued their own fractional notes during this period, most in tiny print runs, distributed locally and rarely traveling far.
Bürgermeister Josef Senzenberger's signature is the only authentication on record. Notes from villages of this size frequently survived in higher proportions than urban issues — locals often kept them as novelties once the scrip was demonetized.
