Leopoldschlag is a small municipality in Upper Austria near the Bohemian border, and its 1920 Heller notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of emergency small-change currency that flooded Austria after the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. Coin shortages were acute — copper and nickel had been diverted to the war effort, and the new republic had not yet stabilized circulation. Municipalities, businesses, and even individual estates printed their own fractions to keep local trade moving.
Josef Hölzl's signature as authorizing official is the only individual name attached to this issue. The Jaksc catalog reference JPR0516-10 places it firmly within the documented Upper Austrian municipal series.
