Gerersdorf is a small Lower Austrian village, and like hundreds of similarly sized communities, it issued Notgeld during the severe coin shortage that followed Austria's defeat in the First World War. The federal government simply could not produce enough small-denomination coinage to meet everyday demand, leaving municipalities to fill the gap themselves. F. Seitenberg in Vienna handled printing for numerous such local issues, which accounts for the professional finish on what is otherwise deeply parochial currency.
The 1920 dating places this in the second wave of Austrian Notgeld — by then, some communities were producing notes more for collector sale than genuine circulation need.
