Frankenmarkt is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note is a product of the emergency currency crisis that gripped Austria after the collapse of the Habsburg empire. With the new republican government unable to distribute sufficient small-denomination coinage, hundreds of municipalities printed their own Notgeld to keep local commerce moving. Frankenmarkt did so locally — the printer was in-house or nearby, not a commercial security press.
The designer credit "A. Wilh" is unusual in appearing at all on a note of this modest municipal origin. Most comparable pieces from Upper Austrian villages went unsigned by any artist.
