Austrian Gemeinde notgeld of this period existed because the postwar collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left small communities without adequate coin for everyday transactions. Fieberbrunn, a small Tyrolean parish, issued these fractional heller notes as a local stopgap — the heller itself was effectively obsolete as a unit within a few years of issue, overtaken by the inflation that gutted the Austrian krone through the early 1920s.
Wagner in Innsbruck handled a substantial share of Tyrolean municipal notgeld printing during this period, and the quality is generally consistent across their commissions.
