Ertl is a small market town in Lower Austria, and this 10 Heller note was issued by its Catholic church-building association — the Kirchenbauverein — as one of the thousands of Notgeld issues that flooded Austria after the First World War left small communities starved of small-denomination coinage. The issuing body is unusual: most Austrian Notgeld came from municipal authorities or savings banks, not parish organizations raising funds for construction.
The two signatories, Schönegger and Stockinger, were almost certainly local committee members rather than banking officials. Whether the association actually completed its building project is unrecorded in standard references.
