Emmersdorf an der Donau is a small market town on the south bank of the Danube in Lower Austria, directly opposite Melk. This note belongs to the massive wave of Austrian municipal Notgeld issued between 1919 and 1921, when post-war coin shortages left local governments scrambling to produce their own small-denomination scrip. The "Herold" press in Vienna handled an enormous volume of these municipal commissions — the printing quality varies considerably across the series, and Emmersdorf's issues are among the plainer productions.
The JPR0171d designation places this within Jaksch's systematic cataloguing of Lower Austrian Notgeld, where the "d" suffix typically denotes a color or paper variant within the same municipal issue.
