Eggenberg was an independent municipality west of Graz until its absorption into the city in 1938. This 10 Heller note is a Kriegsnotgeld — emergency money issued during the First World War when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely, hoarded or melted as metal values outpaced face values. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities did the same, but the hyper-local nature of these issues meant acceptance was often limited to a few streets in any direction.

Three signatories authenticate the note: the Bürgermeister and both Gemeinderäte — the full municipal quorum required to make the obligation legally binding under wartime emergency statutes.
