This is a Notgeld issue — emergency municipal scrip produced during Austria's severe post-WWI currency collapse, when coins vanished from circulation entirely and small communities were left to print their own fractional money. Berg im Attergau, a village in the Salzkammergut lake district, was hardly unique in doing so; hundreds of Austrian municipalities did the same between 1919 and 1921. What is notable is the printer: the Salzkammergut-Druckerei in Gmunden served numerous small issuers across the region, giving this Heller note a more professionally finished appearance than many comparable pieces from village-level authorities.
Three signatories — all named Anton — authenticated the issue on behalf of the Gemeinde.
