Atzenbrugg is a small village in Lower Austria, and its issuance of Notgeld in 1920 reflects the acute small-change shortage that plagued rural Austrian communities in the years immediately following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. Municipal and communal authorities across the former empire filled the vacuum with their own emergency paper, often in very small denominations that commercial banks had no interest in servicing.
Goldmann's Druck in nearby Tulln was a regional printer — not one of the major Notgeld producers — which accounts for the relatively modest production quality typical of this series.
