Printed by a local frame and sawmill company — Rahmenfabrik u. Sägewerk G.m.b.H. — this is about as hyperlocal as Austrian notgeld gets. The arrangement was not unusual for 1920; severe coin shortages in the early postwar republic forced hundreds of municipalities to commission emergency currency from whatever printer was nearest and willing, regardless of specialization. A timber-processing firm producing banknotes is exactly the kind of improvisation that defines this period.

Aschach an der Donau is a small market town on the Danube in Upper Austria. Notes from this issue circulated within the municipality only and were redeemable locally — their survival rate tends to be high, as collectors absorbed most of them before redemption.
