Ardagger is a small market commune in Lower Austria, and like hundreds of similar communities across the former empire, it resorted to printing its own emergency small change — Notgeld — when the postwar coinage shortage made everyday transactions nearly impossible. The four signatures here are unusually numerous for a note of this denomination; most comparable Austrian municipal issues carried one or two authorizing signatures at most.
F. Kielar was a local Amstetten printer with no particular specialization in security printing, which shows in the modest production quality typical of this class of hyperlocal issue.
