Comments

Anif is a small village just south of Salzburg, and like hundreds of Austrian municipalities in 1920, it issued its own emergency small change — Notgeld — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coins from circulation following the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system. This is the second issue (2. Auflage), meaning demand was sufficient to warrant a reprint, which is not guaranteed for a community this size.

E. & W. Müller of Salzburg handled a substantial portion of regional Notgeld production in the province, making them the workhorse printer of Salzburger municipal issues. The engraver credit to Hutter is a useful detail — uncommon for pieces at this denomination level.
