Altenfelden is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 10 Heller note belongs to the vast wave of emergency municipal currency — Notgeld — issued across Austria and Germany in the immediate postwar years when coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The collapse of the Habsburg economy after 1918 left local governments scrambling, and hundreds of municipalities printed their own stopgap issues with minimal oversight.
The Jaksc/Pick reference places this within the documented Austrian series, but Altenfelden's output was small even by Notgeld standards — a village-level issue rather than a regional one.
