| Obverse description | Printed in dark blue on plain paper, the obverse is dominated by a central vignette of a bishop saint in full ecclesiastical vestments, holding a crozier in his left hand and a palm frond in his right, set against a horizontally lined underprint background. Two heraldic shields flank the figure at mid-height — the left bearing a rampant lion, the right bearing crossed keys — while a scrolling ribbon banner below carries the municipal name ABTENAU in bold Gothic lettering. The denomination '10 Heller' appears in large numerals at upper left and upper right, with the legend 'Guttchein' and 'Gemeinde' on flanking ribbon scrolls, and the facsimile signature of Bürgermeister Auer inscribed along the lower margin. |

Abtenau is a small market town in the Tennengau district of Salzburg province, and this 1920 Heller note is a product of the postwar Notgeld wave that swept through Austrian municipalities when small change became almost impossible to source through conventional banking channels. The economic disruption following Austria-Hungary's dissolution left local governments improvising currency solutions at the village level — Abtenau among hundreds of others.
Printed by G. u. A. Müller in Salzburg, a regional firm that handled a number of similar municipal commissions during this period. The designer credit to Hotter is worth noting — local artist involvement was common in Salzburg-area issues, giving many of these notes a craft quality absent from purely utilitarian emergency paper.
