Lilienfeld's 10 Heller Notgeld belongs to the enormous wave of emergency municipal scrip that flooded Austria between 1919 and 1921, when coin shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. The collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left local authorities — Marktgemeinden included — legally empowered to issue their own low-value notes, and hundreds did. Lilienfeld, a small Lower Austrian town best known for its Cistercian abbey, was among them.
These issues were redeemable only locally and typically for a fixed period, after which unredeemed notes were simply voided. Jaksch-catalogued Austrian Notgeld is notoriously inconsistently documented at the municipal level, and Lilienfeld's issues are no exception.
