Mauthausen is a small market town on the Danube in Upper Austria, better known historically for the granite quarries that made it economically significant long before the 20th century. This 10 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency municipal scrip printed during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria following the collapse of the Habsburg Empire. Hundreds of Austrian towns and communes issued their own low-denomination notes between 1919 and 1921 to keep local commerce moving when metal coinage had effectively vanished from circulation.
The official stamp is the validating mechanism that distinguishes genuine municipal issues from printer's specimens in this series.
