Austrian municipal notgeld from the immediate postwar period, when the collapse of the Habsburg economy left small communities printing their own emergency pfennig-denomination scrip to cover the total absence of small change. Luftenberg, a rural commune on the Danube east of Linz, was among hundreds of Upper Austrian municipalities that issued such notes in 1920 — the coordination of these local issues was loosely overseen by provincial authorities, but design and printing arrangements were largely left to individual communes.
The L. Haase credit almost certainly refers to the designer rather than the printer. Haase's name appears on several Upper Austrian notgeld issues from this period, suggesting a regional commercial artist working across multiple municipal commissions simultaneously.
