Arad was one of the last Hungarian fortresses to hold out against Austrian and Russian forces during the suppression of the 1848–49 revolution. This note was produced under siege conditions — the Military Command issuing emergency currency to sustain the garrison and local economy when normal supply lines had collapsed. It is among the more historically charged pieces of the entire Hungarian revolutionary monetary output, issued in a fortress that would become infamous within months: the thirteen Hungarian generals executed by the Austrians at Arad in October 1849 are still commemorated annually in Hungary.
The embossed seal and manuscript signatures were the only practical authentication available under those circumstances. No printing infrastructure, no engraved plates.
