Peter Fendi was among the most celebrated Biedermeier painters in Vienna — his involvement here as designer marks one of the rare occasions the National Bank commissioned a genuinely distinguished fine artist rather than a commercial engraver. The Privilegirte Oesterreichische National-Bank had been re-established by imperial charter in 1816 following the catastrophic Bancozettel inflation, and notes of this period were issued under conditions of hard-won public skepticism toward paper currency.

The 1841 series predates the revolutionary upheavals of 1848, which would force dramatic changes to Austrian monetary policy. Fendi died in 1842, making this one of his final commissions.
