Additional information

This piece belongs to the FAO coinage program, a United Nations initiative that ran from the late 1960s through the 1990s, commissioning member nations to issue coins promoting food security and agricultural development. Paraguay's participation reflected the country's heavy dependence on agricultural exports — particularly soybeans and cotton — which dominated the economy through the Stroessner decades and into the transitional democratic period that followed his 1989 ouster. The brass-plated steel composition replaced an earlier brass version, a cost-driven change recorded in the KM#178a designation.
