Poland's postwar coinage reform of 1949 involved extensive material testing as the new communist government sought cheap, domestically manageable alloys. Aluminium trials like this piece were struck alongside copper-nickel and iron candidates before final compositions were confirmed. The standard 10 Groszy ultimately issued that year went to aluminium — but not all trial specifications survived into production unchanged.
