| Additional information |
The Sovereign Military Order of Malta is a peculiar issuing authority — a sovereign entity without territory (it lost Malta to Napoleon in 1798 and Rhodes two centuries before that), yet recognized by over a hundred states and maintaining permanent observer status at the United Nations. Its coinage, issued from 1961 onward, is legal tender in name but was never intended for circulation. The 1969 bronze issues were produced for collectors at a moment when the Order was aggressively reasserting its international diplomatic presence after decades of relative obscurity.
X#29 places this squarely in the Krause "unusual world coins" classification — acknowledgment that no standard monetary system underpins it.
