Piedfort trials of this type were produced by the Paris Mint — almost certainly by the Monnaie de Paris under contract — as presentation strikes submitted for approval during the development of Haiti's commemorative gourdes series honoring the bicentennial of Toussaint L'Ouverture's birth. The double-thickness format was standard Parisian practice for official approval pieces, not intended for circulation but for submission to the issuing authority.
Toussaint died in the Fort de Joux prison in the French Jura in 1803, never seeing the independence he made possible.
