Haiti's early 1970s silver program was largely driven by the Franklin Mint's aggressive pursuit of foreign government contracts for collector-market issues — prestige pieces with no meaningful circulation history. This 10 Gourdes piece belongs to that wave, part of a series depicting North American wildlife that had no particular connection to Haitian culture or commerce, produced almost entirely for the international numismatic market under the Duvalier government, which found such arrangements a convenient source of hard currency.
