The 1927 Albanian gold issues were produced in Rome at the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato as part of Ahmet Zogu's broader effort to establish monetary credibility for a state that had only formally become a kingdom the following year. "Prova" — Italian for proof or trial — designates this as a pattern strike, produced for approval rather than circulation. How many were struck is not reliably documented, which is typical of Italian prova issues from this period.
Zogu's monetary system was pegged to the gold-backed Albanian Franga Ari, itself introduced in 1926 under heavy Italian financial sponsorship following the First Treaty of Tirana.
