Piéforts from the Monnaie de Paris were produced specifically for collectors and never entered general circulation — struck at double the standard thickness using the same dies as the circulation issue. This piece corresponds to the regular 10-franc coin of 1985, itself part of a commemorative program honoring the centenary of Victor Hugo's death on May 22, 1885.
