Additional information

The Democratic Republic of the Congo adopted its current name in 1997 following Laurent-Désiré Kabila's overthrow of Mobutu Sese Seko, who had renamed the country Zaïre in 1971. This coin was struck during the brief window of relative administrative coherence before the Second Congo War fully consumed the state — Kabila himself was assassinated in January 2001. The DRC's commemorative silver program of this period was issued almost entirely for export, with no meaningful domestic circulation.
