Reverse description The reverse bears a right-facing portrait profile of Robert Schuman, French Foreign Minister and founding architect of the European Union. To the left of the portrait, twelve stars of the European Community are arranged in the stylized form of the letter 'E'. The circular legend reads 'LIBERTÉ·ÉGALITÉ·FRATERNITÉ' and 'ROBERT SCHUMAN', encircling the central design. The coin commemorates the centenary of Schuman's birth (1886–1963) and his landmark Schuman Declaration of May 9, 1950, which laid the groundwork for European integration. The reverse was engraved by Bernard Turlan.
